A Lucky Break

A Lucky Break

On Tuesday, we found out that the guest entertainer had an expired passport when attempting to pass through customs. This meant that our band would have the following day off! Lisa and I decided to go diving on the Great Barrier Reef again. This time, we would be diving specifically on Moore Reef. The experience surpassed the earlier dive in almost every way. The weather, diving conditions, marine life, water temperature, etc, all just happened to be even better than than what we had experienced on Monday’s dive. The dive master took us through nooks and crannies within the reef. It nearly resembled cave diving at times as we swam through holes in the reef that led to the open ocean on the other side. We saw all kinds of fish as well as the friendly humphead maori wrasse species that we encountered days earlier. I even spotted a nice looking reef shark from a distance after reaching the reef ridge leading to the open sea.

The lunch we enjoyed resembled the same lunch as we experienced on Monday, but I enjoyed it just as much. The ride on the pontoon from the ship to Moore Reef did not take as long as the journey to Knuckle Reef; this helped a lot regarding sea sickness issues.

Aside from the awesome diving on the Great Barrier Reef, the life on the ship has been pretty nice overall. In general, we play for a lot of guest entertainers. I enjoy this very much because it breaks up the monotony of having to play similar songs constantly. We don’t know these guest entertainers, usually, until our afternoon rehearsal at around 4pm. Then after about an hour of discussing and playing, we all go our separate ways until the evening shows (7 pm and 9 pm). The entertainers come from any country with repertoire spanning any style of music. This keeps us on our toes! Having my guitar synth has proven to be very valuable. In the course of two weeks, I’ve had to play “mandolin” solos and banjo rhythms. The guest entertainers love that I can make my guitar sound like these instruments. One one occasion, I actually created the sound of a string quartet! Even the band master did some research to see if he could buy one of these synths for his bass guitar. As of now, he is planning on incorporating songs that really feature electric guitar now that I’m on board.

Laundry issues have arisen while here in Australia because of legal stipulations concerning releasing water into the sea. Around the reef, the ships cannot unload this water nearly to the degree that they do in other parts of the world. This meant, very little laundry capability for the crew. One buddy of mine had to wash his underwear and socks in his sink for about a week. Fortunately, I got a tip from someone who who knew a friend that had a key to the laundry room, so I was able to expedite my cleaning on my own volition.

The food has been quite good in the crew mess. They actually have three mess halls here. One of them offers very healthy food including whole wheat pasta and brown rice (as opposed to the regular white rice and pasta). Even the muffins that I eat for breakfast are whole wheat muffins! I try to eat a nice balanced diet here, although I do miss dairy queen. I’ll keep everyone posted on my adventures in Asia.
